Senator Relic

investmenttool.com Opinion

Kathy Mazza was 46 years old. She was advanced well into a second career. She rushed into the World Trade Center on September 11 to do her job, help save the people who were desperate to escape. After saving dozens she had a chance to escape with her life. Instead she went on to save others. She is a real American hero in the truest sense of the word.

Captain Kathy Mazza became a Port Authority Cop as a second career, after a successful career as a nurse. She wanted something new for her life and she advanced quickly, reaching the rank of Captain before September 11, 2001.

When the call went out that the Trade Towers had been attacked, she did not hesitate. She rushed in to save others, without any regard for her own safety.

As witnesses account, Kathy Mazza guided a large number of people down from the heights of danger to the front door of the North Tower. While guiding this group toward safety she saw the South Tower collapse. She was aware that the North Tower could meet the same fate. As a matter of fact she was probably aware that the same fate would probably be what happened to the North Tower.

When she reached the front lobby, the revolving door was stuck. She did not hesitate. She drew her gun and fired, shattering the glass and allowing others to escape to safety.

At that point, knowing what happened to the South Tower nobody would have blamed her for leaving with those she saved. The building was emptying out. It seemed that most who would escape were already out. Yet, she rushed back to help her fellow officers.

They were helping a woman down the steps in a portable chair, designed to get the wheelchair bound out of tall structures. The Trade Towers were equipped with these devices probably as a result of the 1993 attack, when there were difficulties evacuating the disabled.

Kathy Mazza was found in the rubble last week with four of her brother officers and the woman they were trying to save. They all died died on duty, performing it with the greatest of bravery.

I did not know Kathy Mazza, yet I see people like her each and every day. They are the police officers and fire fighters that I see on the streets of Chicago each and every day. These people are the front line in the defense on of terror. They stand ready, willing to sacrifice their lives to save ours.

Each and every one of them are heroes, in the potential sense of the word. Hearing Kathy Mazza's story brought tears to my eyes again, as many of the stories of September 11 did. I admit this fact shamelessly, and people like Kathy have brought me new appreciation for life, and the people who safeguard it.
