The Week ahead
The Tug of war
The week ahead is a tug of war. The downward pull of fear from the next Enron is fighting against the strength of an economic recovery. Which way the market goes is now in doubt for the first time since the market began recovering from the September 11 terrorist attacks.
The good news is that consumer confidence is rising steadily and the pace of job loss has slowed to near neutral. The economy appears to have recovered and seems set for strong growth.
The crisis of confidence in the equities markets has yet to make its way into the general economy. As long as that fails to happen there is hope for long-term prospect of the market.
There are three things that drive the market. Earnings, earnings and earnings. If the economy starts to grow the market will eventually follow.
