Our own wonderful transportation technology was used as an instrument of mass murder on Tuesday. It is possible to use technology to prevent this from happening. It is possible with today's technology to say never again.

The technology exists to make our aircraft and airports bomb proof and knife proof. This technology, expensive today came make bomb threats something that lacks credibility. The maintenance workers that service the plan can also be scanned,

These simple measures in conjunction with at technology based id card system can make our transportation system secure. Smart card technology needs to be used to replace photo id's which are so easy to forge.

Though it is a potential infringement on our freedom, a national smart card identification system could be implemented. Though Constitutionally, we can not mandate citizens to carry them everywhere, we can make them a requirement for using our transportation systems.

Under such a scenario, the instant a terrorist's visa expires, his freedom of movement and ability to fly in this nation would be over. The instant the card was lost, it could be deactivated. The card can be activated by genetic scan and be useless in the hands of another. It could also have a photo on it to show to airport security.

These measures are both affordable and necessary. They may seem like an infringement on our freedoms. It is a minor one and is necessary to protect our freedoms over the long term.
