In the past twenty working days, I have used no gasoline on 14 of them. Nor did I use the public transportation system. Nor was I forced to purchase gasoline, whose price rocketed due to a refinery fire in Illinois. How did I do this? Simple, I got on a bicycle.

Yes, the bicycle. On those 14 mornings, I loaded up a back pack with clean clothes and hit the road, riding 13 miles to and from work on a trail network that is simply wonderful. Chicago has a trail system that lets me get from my home to office with almost no exposure to large, busy streets.

From my sleepy street to the lake shore drive path takes around 20 minutes and largely avoids large streets. From there its bike path time, following the scenic lake shore, filled with exercising people. The biggest danger there are roller bladers that don't like looking where they are going and swerve all over the trail.

The last mile or so is kind of tense on city streets, but in the end, I arrive at my office fully awake, a little sweeaty and having planned my day as I ride. At my office I clean up, change my clothes and dive into my day.

The benefits are obvious. I emit no greenhouse gases. I work my cardio-vascular system and feel better.

This kind of transportation is available in many cities. Though some may simply live too far from their jobs to enjoy this, many should look into it. I've ridden so much this summer, my bike has worn out. I'm dropping off for repairs in a few days.
