Windows Me

investmenttool.com technology journal

For most people, Windows Me is simply an upgrade that they don't need to have. You will recall last fall, I tried to install it on a Windows 98 system. I was so disappointed, I pulled it back off, but it didn't completely remove itself, forcing me to scratch the system and start anew.

That was the ugly, first experience. My consulting practice forced me to take a second look and I feel fairness requires a report.

My uncle runs a large apartment complex in the Chicago suburbs. In the office, he has two computer systems, both equipped with lan cards connected to a hub. They share word documents, an accounting system and a few odds and ends.

When they purchased another building, the second computer was shipped up to the new complex., leaving the main office with just one. That made the two people working there a little uncomfortable, so they purchased a second system from Dell(from this very web site).

The new machine did not come with the correct network settings, so I was called in to deal with the situation. I am not a networking specialist, and I prefer NT and Windows 2000 to the consumer products, but they didn't ask me.

I expected the touchy fight I endured to get the last workstation to function. It had taken around two hours because of Windows 98 clunky system and slow reboot cycles. This time was different.

All I had to do was make the workgroups match and assign a unique IP address to the new computer. It automatically detected all shared directories on the first computer and place them in the "My Network Places" folder. When we added a new shared directly, it appeared before our very eyes in the client machine.

I give credit where credit is due. Nice job Mr. Gates.

I do not advocate going out and buying this upgrade. Its simply not worth the money or the effort. If however, it comes on a machine you buy, you need not fear. It is a minor but nice step in the right direction.
